Do the Logo motion
What's in a band logo and why do we need one?
As with most of our collaborations, creating our logo was a joint effort
David and I are working on our fifth release from the album CORONASOMNIA. We wrote it during the lockdown and the name is an amalgamation of the Corona Virus plus the sleepless nights of Insomnia which David experienced, being too excited to go to sleep. He would work on my vocal takes from the day and dream up his musical accompaniments during the night. He’s a night owl and I’m an early bird!
We thought our collection was grown up enough now to have its own logo and call it an EP. David has a yen to create some physical merch in the form of CDs. We can add them to the merch section of our Bandcamp site www.peacefulcacophony.bandcamp.com and I can take CDs along when I am selling my books at fairs. Of course his absolute wet dream is vinyl….might have to sell a few more copies of our EP to be able to afford a pressing (hint hint).
Luckily, as both of us are drawn to wearing black, red and white, choosing the colour way was easy peasy. David calls us Ebony and Ivory and that reflects in our contrasting characters as well as our dress choices. He literally lurks in the darkness of his music pit (I call him the Dark Knight) and I much prefer being out in the first light of the day and going for walks in nature. It also reflects our inner set points towards life. Introvert and extrovert, contrasts which attract.
David’s skilled musicianship has to be highlighted and although he is equally adept at drums and bass, lead guitar is the easiest visual symbol representing our unique version of alt-rock. David looked at the 28 ideas I put together on the logo making website and discarded most of them (haha), as he wanted a Les Paul guitar head. Apparently some of my ideas smacked of Country & Western acoustic guitar (God forbid) or Heavy Metal with the wrong kind of wings, but we got there in the end!
Me being the arty-farty one, came up with the idea of the dove of peace for the ‘Peaceful’ part of our musical relationship. The pair of doves represents the musical chemistry we have spoken about and the flow when we write together, which seems effortless. I chose red for passion of expression.
The second name, ‘Cacophony,’ describes our opposing musical tension which we experience when our more passionate renditions peak, in a seemingly clashing dichotomy of sound. Sometimes David thrashes a solo to the point of breaking strings! He provides the clashing symbols and storming guitar riffs, lifting the tracks out of the mundane and expressing that surge of emotion. Once the passion has found its resolution, it ebbs and flows into a solid verse with guitar artistry. Last but not least, an ethereal bridge and wistful middle eight, those are my speciality and sometimes my favourite part of the song.
Life is a collection of contrasts, both peaceful and cacophonous. Salty and peppery :)
